Schizophrenia indicates a group of serious disorders where in individual loses touch with reality, feeling totally distorted perceptions or irrational ideas. It is a possibly severe mental disorder that impacts affects almost one individual in hundred. Many times people who suffer from schizophrenia have hallucinations or delusions. Throughout Adolescence the brain is still developing, things such as drug use can have a major effect on a developing brain; much different than the effects drugs have on an adult brain. Each day there are more and more people diagnosed with Schizophrenia. The exact cause of Schizophrenia has not yet been proven. The cause of disorders such as Schizophrenia is most likely a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Through my research, many of the unanswered questions of what may be causing the early onset of this disorder in teens will be answered.
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disease that impacts a broad range of a person’s social and developmental functioning. This disorder usually runs in the family, but the environment can play a major role as well. The symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and behavior, lack of emotion, and paranoia. Schizophrenia is not a mood disorder.A person with a mood disorder is usually depressed, whereas, a person with schizophrenia is simply paranoid. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this illness, but it can be managed with medicines and therapy. Schizophrenia usually occurs in adults, but it can sometimes show in adolescents. When someone is diagnosed with schizophrenia, it changes their whole life around. People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia are affected throughout their entire lives.
The Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library stated that schizophrenia is caused by a chemical imbalance and other changes in the brain. Learning to cope with the disease and symptoms may be hard, but with the right medicine and therapy, people can learn to prevent the reappearance of symptoms. According to Teeple, Caplan, & Stern, (2009), “Nearly half of the outpatients treated for schizophrenia fail to take their medication; the relapse rate is high among such patients.” (Teeple, Caplan, & Stern, 2009). For instants, most people have a hard time remembering their medication and talking about this illness can be hard for people because all they want to do is forget about their disease and their strange thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Most research done in the past did not include children who suffer from this disorder because schizophrenia was mostly seen in early adulthood (Teeple, Caplan, & Stern, 2009). Children’s brains are already going through changes throughout their childhood. Therefore it is hard for doctors to detect the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia impacts a person’s social and daily life in a lot of different ways. Some of the ways schizophrenia can affect a person’s life are their thinking process, their showings of emotion, their thinking that someone or something is after them. There are much more ways a person with schizophrenia must cope with their disease that affects their everyday lifestyle. One of the hardest things a person with this disease has to deal with is the loss of friends and sometimes family. Many people do not understand this illness which causes them to look at a person with this disease in a different way than normal. The second edition book of Diagnosis: Schizophrenia says, “There is a stigma related to schizophrenia based on common stereotypes of people with schizophrenia as frightening, dangerous, and different.” (Sekar, Bialas, de Rivera, Davis, Hammond, Kamitaki, & Genovese, 2016). Stereotyping a person has been around for a long time in this world. Most people stereotype others who look or act differently than them. For example, in today’s world, most people assume all American people are racist, all African American people are criminals, and all Police Officers want to kill all of the criminals. These examples, of course, are not entirely true. Yes, when someone sees a person talking to themselves they tend to think they are crazy. Stereotyping a person with schizophrenia as scary or crazy can be hurtful to that person who has this disease they cannot control (Sekar, Bialas, de Rivera, Davis, Hammond, Kamitaki, & Genovese, 2016).
Diagnosing schizophrenia is not like diagnosing any other disease. Usually doctors can take an x-ray or a blood test to figure out the problem, but when diagnosing schizophrenia, doctors must gather information about the patient from the patient and their family members and see if the symptoms match with the disease (Sekar, Bialas, de Rivera, Davis, Hammond, Kamitaki, & Genovese, 2016).The modern diagnosis of schizophrenia is based on patterns of behavior and psychopathology that can be assessed (Ceylan, Yeşilyurt, Akdede, Sayın, & Alptekin, 2016). Due to my own knowledge, there are different types of schizophrenia which causes, even more, confusion with diagnosing the disorder.There are five different types of schizophrenia stated by Ceylan, Yeşilyurt, Akdede, Sayın, & Alptekin, 2016, and they are, paranoid schizophrenia, disorganized schizophrenia, catatonic schizophrenia, undifferentiated schizophrenia, and residual schizophrenia.Each of these types of schizophrenia has similar symptoms but have different impacts on people, and must be treated differently.Not all brain disorders are the same, but they can all have same symptoms.
In conclusion, people diagnosed with schizophrenia have different things they must cope with while having the disease. Schizophrenia causes people to lose friends and family who do not understand their disease.It also changes their way of thinking about their life.It is best that people who have this disorder to seek help from therapists and special medications.While this disease is mostly seen in early adulthood, there are many cases where it can be detected in young children.Schizophrenia is a serious disease that people tend to stereotype the people who have it as dangerous and crazy when some are just children. Although there is no cure for schizophrenia, neuroleptic medications can control the symptoms in a positive way.
