- What has been the impact of trade with China on employment in the U.S.economy—either in the manufacturing sector or more broadly? How widespread is this impact—is it highly localized, or has it affected broad regions and sectors of the U.S. economy? For this topic, you should focus on the assigned readings (on Blackboard/Content/Topics 3-5) by Autor, Dorn, and Hanson (2016) and Scott (2017), as well as any other analyses or critiques that you find. As best as you can understand them, try to explain and critically evaluate the methodologies the authors use to identify this impact, and evaluate which estimates you think are more reliable and why. You may also wish to comment on why trade with China has been estimated to have such large effects since around 2001.
