In this recent debate, yet recurring historical theme, it is argued that immigration increases criminal activity, in the respective communities. Scarcely can one read or watch any media and not be provided a rationale for the deportation of immigrants as a result of their increased criminal activity. Most of the arguments have been premised on individual and ecological factors. This week, we address the findings from empirical support regarding the ability of immigration, and the respective cultures, to increase criminal activity within certain communities. Most notably, this week will be spent examining the impact of the oft noted theory of social disorganization on homicidal activity.
Assignment: Review the Rodney King Incident (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_King) and think about how the violence perpetrated on King could have been predicted and perhaps prevented. Then suggest a set of workable alternatives to the use of deadly force that today’s police forces might effectively use in their confrontation with violent individuals. You may give some consideration to the findings of the Christopher Commission (http://www.hrw.org/legacy/reports/reports98/police/uspo73.htm), charged with examining the use of force on King. However, your task is to go further and develop a larger set of recommendations (the workable alternatives to the use of deadly force) that show innovation as well as imagination.
