Why is visual management so important for a Lean transformation?

Visual management provides a clear feedback about the overall progress and performance of the lean transformation initiatives. When we bring in change, the senior leadership would expect to see the impacts and outcomes immediately. They would have a lot of questions about the progress made after change. The visual management system provides answers to the important questions about the status of the change. It shares real-time information and feedback about the status of our company’s operations. The most important reason for implementing visual management is to fuel problem-solving and continuous focused improvements. It reduces the overall response time by providing relevant information to teams. By providing teams with quick feedback, they are given the responsibility and accountability for their actions. The visual management system also leads the drive to make the operations more transparent and, therefore, more efficient.

What does an effective visual management system look like?

An effective visual management system displays production status and performance information. It also provides information on communication standards and work instructions. It makes the problems and abnormalities visible and shows it’s root cause and directions. Visual management system can reduce the opportunity for miscommunication, highlight abnormalities and deviations, and provide an immediate insight to the next steps. When problems and deviations are visible and apparent to all, immediate corrective action can be taken to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes. These systems are also used to share goals and ideas, report team progress, and indicate risks to promote future safety at work.

unit 9 :Your CEO is concerned about taking the first steps on the Agile Lean transformation effort. She understands that companies often fail because they cannot figure out where to start. You know as the transformation leader that you need to view change management from two viewpoints – managers and front-line employees . So, when your CEO asks you to describe what would be your first step, you decide to use the managers and front-line employees as the starting point. What specifically will you tell her about one step you would take with managers and one step you would take with employees?

  • In today’s business environment, companies cannot settle for incremental improvement; they must periodically undergo performance transformations to get, and stay, on top. But in the volumes of pages on how to go about implementing a transformation, surprisingly little addresses the role of people. According to me, it is very important to have committed and engaged team of people who believe in the change initiative in order to have a successful transformation.
There are 4 main focus areas to keep in mind while planning any transformation activity:1. Make the transformation meaningful.2. Senior leadership should model the expected behavior.3.Building a strong and committed top team.4. Pursue the impact and evaluate the progress.I would start with identifying the team members and their capabilities in order to create a team that can lead the change initiative. These people can be the change advocates who will help to share the vision and reason for the change and the new expected behavior. They will be the voice of the senior leadership to a large mass of the employees and also the ‘listening board’ for any concerns and questions. They can act as the perfect bridge between the leadership and the employees during the change transformation.Looking forward to hear from others about their point of view on the same.

  • Accepting change is not always easy for organizations. It takes a lot of efforts to get everyone on the same page about the importance of changes for the organization. Though the perspective of managers could be very different from the perspective of regular employees about the change.Usually, even if the managers are not directly involved in the decision-making process, they find out about the potential changes earlier than their subordinates. Therefore, they have more time to adapt to the change management process and get ready for the differences that changes are going to cause. Managers must act as transformational leaders. It is their responsibility to communicate the change management process to their subordinates in a way that minimizes surprises and make the employees support the change. Therefore, the most important difference between the perspective of managers and front-line employees is that managers need to be on board with the importance of the change and take on a leadership role to ensure success of the organization, while the employees need to understand the importance of changes and the differences that are going to happen to their responsibilities and daily tasks.
