Take ONE political era in American history, (ex. Bush administration, Clinton administration, Obama administration), and explain the policies during this era that affected marriage and family. It’s a good idea to take ONE aspect and explain and analyze it, rather than give a laundry list of policies.
I chose Governor Mike Huckabee from Arkansas and the policies he and his wife made that affected marriage and family. On Valentines Day 2005 he and his wife converted their marriage to a covenant marriage in from of a crowd of 6,400 men and women.

The topic is fine. Cherlin actually talks about similar policies in the book. One thing you want to avoid when choosing this paper is personal opinions about it. Use sociology and not personal opinions or emotions. The difficulties I see with this topic is that effects of policies take time to understand. For example, you initiate a policy this year, it doesn’t mean that you will see the effect next year, or even the next. So be careful about how you’re measuring and assessing this.
