7a (parts 1, 2, and 3) Working with sentence structure to better convey your ideas

The following assignment requires different posts. Please remember to address your reader and sign your posts–something along the lines of “Hello Jack,” and “Take care, Sonya.” The following gives you an idea of the organization of the posts for 7a:

Part 1) You will start a discussion thread.

Part 2) For this part of the assignment you must REPLY to a classmate’s thread.

Part 3) You will reply to the response a classmate made to your work in your own thread from part 1

For this assignment there will only be on discussion thread per a student; please do not start new discussion threads. Thanks!

7a Part 1

Please review the material below (after I explain the three parts of this assignment) from Purdue University. After you have reviewed the material, select a topic (Yes, you get to pick the topic for this assignment.) and write three sentences—all in the same tense—on that topic: one simple, one compound, and one complex. Post them in the appropriate discussion Board thread. Do not label your own sentences as simple, complex, and compound.

Your sentences are due Tuesday by 11:59 PM

7a Part 2

You must respond to a classmate’s sentences, someone who has not yet had a response, by noting which sentences you think are simple, compound, and complex. Additionally, write a brief paragraph in which you use all three sentences and add sentences of your own; be sure to write the paragraph in one tense. Have fun with this assignment.

Your labeling your classmates’ sentences and your separate paragraph are due by Wednesday at 11:59. Please do not label the sentences when you write the paragraph.

7a Part 3

You need to respond to your classmates labeling of your sentences. Let your classmate know if she or he correctly labeled them and write one more paragraph that develops the idea(s) in the paragraph your classmate wrote using your sentences. You are writing a new paragraph much as one does when writing paragraphs for an essay. Think about how you can make a transition at the start of your paragraph so that your paragraph connects to the paragraph your classmate wrote with your sentences. Paragraph transitions help readers understand the connections between the ideas within different paragraphs.

Your response to your classmate’s labeling of your sentences and the additional paragraph are due by 11:59 PM Firday.

The following explanation on sentence types comes from the Purdue Owl:

Sentence Types

Structurally, English sentences can be classified four different ways [I omitted the fourth way because we are not working with it], though there are endless constructions of each. The classifications are based on the number of independent and dependent clauses a sentence contains. An independent clause forms a complete sentence on its own, while a dependent clause needs another clause to make a complete sentence. By learning these types, writers can add complexity and variation to their sentences.

Simple sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and no dependent clauses.

My aunt enjoyed taking the hayride with you.

China’s Han Dynasty marked an official recognition of Confucianism.

Compound Sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses but no dependent clauses.

The clown frightened the little girl, and she ran off screaming when she saw it.

The Freedom Riders departed on May 4, 1961, and they were determined to travel through many southern states.

Complex Sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. [For this assignment, you must have the dependent clause at the start of the sentence.]

After Mary added up all the sales, she discovered that the lemonade stand was 32 cents short

While all of his paintings are fascinating, Hieronymus Bosch’s triptychs, full of mayhem and madness, are the real highlight of his art.

Please notice Material for 7a part 2&3 will be provided after part 1 is completed

***PLEASE WRITE IN SIMPLY LANGUAGE***

***Must be on Time***

-7a Part 1 Due Tuesday before 11:45pm

-7a Part 2 Due Wednesday before 11:45pm

-7a Part 3 Due Friday before 11:45pm

Differentiated instruction is built on a foundation of effective teaching practices. Quality curriculum is one of these defining principles, as what is taught serves as the basis for how it is taught. Quality curriculum has its basis in standards, or descriptions of student outcomes in content areas. (Puckett, 2013, Chap. 5, Introduction)

However, many educators have concerns regarding these new standards for various reasons outlined in Chapter 5 in the textbook including, but not limited to:

  • Lack of training to implement the new standards
  • A realistic view of standard mastery of students with special needs
  • Too much government control over creative freedom of instruction
  • How these new standards will be implemented on such a large scale

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are meant to provide educators and parents with a consistent and clear understanding of student expectations. While written to address English Language Arts and Mathematics, the CCSS address college and career ready knowledge and skills in preparing students to transition from high school to college.

Assignment Instructions:

First, read Chapter 5 of the course text. Then view the webinar, “Common Core State Standards: Where Does Differentiating Fit”.

Next, read and respond to the following scenario:

Ms. Phillips instructs in a middle school inclusion class with 20 ‘typical’ students, three students who have an IEP for a Specific Learning Disability, one student who has an IEP for “Other Health Impairment” (ADHD) and two students who are identified as ELL. Her class is beginning with a unit on the American Civil War that will focus on the significance of the Civil War Battle and the reason and significance behind President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

As the unit starts, Ms. Phillips provides her students with a KWL chart to share what they already know about the Civil War

Week2Discussion_1_Image.JPG

Example of a Student Response to the KWL Chart (Creately, 2011)

After reviewing the student’s KWL charts (see an example above), Ms. Phillips realizes that she should integrate differentiated strategies to provide a more well-rounded and accurate understanding of the topic and to make it more personally relevant.

For this discussion:

  • Create two measurable lesson objectives that are aligned with one Common Core Standard. For each of the objectives, create two differentiated strategies designed to master the objective.
  • Explain how the strategies you’ve suggested are engaging to diverse learners.
  • Cite scholarly sources to support how your strategies are examples of differentiation. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

350 words

Examine “All Children Can Learn“. Then, search the web for effective, evidence-based differentiated strategies that are engaging, motivating, and address the needs of individual learners.

First, provide five evidence-based strategies:

  • Two instructional strategies (i.e., graphic organizers),
  • Two instructional tools (e.g., technology tool, device or iPad App, Web Quests, etc.),
  • One activity (e.g., Think-Pair-Share).

Second, for the two instructional strategies you listed explain how you can alter each to address the classroom needs you designed in Weeks One and Two and how the modification is relevant to the theory of differentiation.

Biblical Allusions in Beowulf

1) Read and take notes on the attached pdf. Pay close attention to allusions, and tone. Help me understand this article better. can you give me some notes on this article? How do they help the exposition? How do they begin to develop the characters? Does it present possible themes?

2) Now, I need a paragraph for a discussion post….. How are they used to enrich the audience’s understanding of a central theme and to further characterize the monster, Grendel? Be sure to provide evidence from the text to support your answer. When the Christian monks wrote down the epic, they liberally integrated Christianity throughout the story. Look for the allusions to Christianity such as the story of creation, Cain, and Abel, etc. Thinking about what you know about the pagan traditions of the Anglo-Saxons, do these two sets of values contradict?
