Some people believe college students should consider only their own talents and interests when choosing a field of study. Others believe your choice should be based on availability of jobs in the field.
Who have you consulted for advice toward your career? What influenced you in your research? Salary? Satisfaction?

I believe that college students should consider their field of study based on what they love doing. If they don’t consider that, they’ll end up having a job. A job is when you are working somewhere for the money and it’s something you don’t really like doing. A career is working somewhere loving what you are doing. I have consulted with family and coaches about my career goals, aspirations, and ways to get there. My field was very eye-opening, and it showed me that I had a lot more options with my degree. It showed me that to get to that point, I had to work hard for maybe a few more years in college.

With developments in modern medicine and greater knowledge of lifestyle practices that increase health, the average age today is much older than in decades past. Coupled with the fact that it is economically more difficult to save sufficient money for retirement, people are working until an older age. Because of these factors contributing to extended years of employment, I think that job satisfaction is an important aspect of a career. I think it is essential to have a job that you can wake up looking forward to going to each day. I am fortunate to be a student who entered college knowing what major I wanted to devote my education towards – biology – and it directly relates to my future career – a physician assistant. My parents definitely helped guide my in the right direction for choosing a career. I have always been very interested in science, especially biology and areas pertaining to the human body, so I have known since middle school that I wanted a job in the medical field. When it came down to deciding on being a doctor versus a PA, my parents gave me a lot of advice on looking at my career through a life-long lens. While earning a good salary is important, especially after all of the hard work I have put into school as a pre-professional science major, there are other elements to a satisfying career. The amount of debt accumulated after graduate (PA) school, the crucial need for PAs in the medical workforce, and time I will be able to spend with my future family are aspects of my life that I weighed heavily in my career choice. I am excited to have a career that I will be passionate about until eventual retirement, while also knowing that the need for my medical profession will never go away.
