In Colloquium I and your Concentration Course #1, you completed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), which was product one of your Capstone Project. Your SLR set the foundation for your Capstone Project, which analyzed the literature that framed the present understanding of your social problem, social issue, or practice problem.

In this course, you will develop a conceptual paper, which will serve as product two of your Capstone Project. In this paper, you will identify, explore, and critically analyze theory(ies)  and frameworks to address your identified social problem, social issue, or practice problem.  Conceptual Papers aim to synthesize knowledge from previous work on a particular topic and present it in a new context to springboard new research or practice approaches that will fill current knowledge gaps.

The development of your Conceptual Paper is an iterative process divided into five parts. Together, the composite of assignments will constitute 50% of your grade.

  1. Conceptual Paper: Paper 1 (Module 10, 40 points)
  2. Peer Review of Paper 2 (Module 13, 10 points) *
  3. Conceptual Paper: Final (Module 15, 50 points)

*Points for the peer review are part of your overall participation score.

Conceptual Paper Components

The final version of the Conceptual Paper, submitted in module 15, should include each of the following components:

  • Articulate a practice problem/social issue.
    • Background of the problem/issue
    • Rationale for focus
  • Provide an overview/synthesis of the literature
    • What we know about the problem/issue
    • What has been done to address the problem/issue
    • What areas still need to be examined/gaps
  •  Articulate your conceptual idea/solution/intervention
    • How does your concept address the gap you identified
    • What is/are the theoretical framework(s) that informs your conceptualization
      • Key theoretical concepts and terminology
      • Epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying the theorical frameworks
      • Strengths and limitations
      • Implications for diverse client groups
  • How does this conceptual idea improve the problem/issue
    • Bridge existing theory(ies) with your conceptual idea
    • What’s new about this framework
    • Why is it needed
    • Strengths, limitations, and ethical considerations
    • Implications for diverse client groups
  • Implications for social work practice, policy, and/or research.

Each scholarly product (SLR, CP, and PAP) is to be written from the context on one’s area of concentration (administrative leadership, clinical, military behavioral health, or social work education). You should give considerable thought to the scope of your topic and the language you use to express it, because this will have significant implications for your approach to the paper.

In your problem statement, identify why there is a need to analyze your chosen theory(ies) based on new research. Discuss how the problem is typically defined. Why is it defined this way and what are alternative ways of defining and conceptualizing the problem? Be sure and give your rationale for alternative ways of defining and conceptualizing the problem. In your literature review, include what is known about your problem/construct as well as a critical discussion of how relevant theories have been critically applied.
