  • Free speech is America’s morning coffee. Take it away and you will receive the wrath of everyone who craves it. Free Speech is a combination of an individual’s rights and government control. The Constitution of the United States was written in 1787. By 1789, only nine of the thirteen states had approved the Constitution. They worried that the government would have too much control. As a result, in 1789, the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. The Bill of Rights consists of the first ten amendments that were added to the Constitution.

According to the Bill of Rights Institute, “the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights protects freedom of speech, religion, the press, and assembly.” Although these rights are protected under law, they are sometimes threatened by new situations. Since the Bill of Rights were written in 1789, there have been many changes that can test the First Amendment, such as the Internet, with Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and emails. New situations involving free speech must be re-evaluated to ensure that our freedom of speech continues to be preserved. According to The Federalist Papers from the Library of Congress, Alexander Hamilton stated, “In a government framed for durable liberty, no less regard must be paid to giving the magistrate a proper degree of authority, to make and execute the laws with vigor than to guarding against encroachments upon the rights of the community. As too much power leads to despotism, too little leads to anarchy, and both eventually to the ruin of the people.” He is stating that there should be a balance between an individual’s rights and government control.
