Project Description:
You will research a historical or contemporary three-dimensional design that attempts to incorporate a Christian worldview. The paper will include a formal analysis of the work through an examination of specific elements and principles of design used within the design. The procedure and structure for this assignment is provided below. (CLO 2, 5)
Procedure:
Find at least 3 sources (in addition to the text and the Bible) related to a historical or contemporary three-dimensional design that attempts to incorporate a Christian worldview. Make topic-specific note cards as you read information related to your chosen design (using the topics listed below for the structure of the paper). Write a paragraph on each of the requested topics using your research cards, starting with Context. Use headers (such as Context, Descriptive Inventory, etc.) for each paragraph. The Critique Paper must be 600–700 words.
Synthesis pointers:
- Paraphrase. Write the paper in your own words.
- If you use quotes, use them sparingly and with emphasis.
- When using quotes, cite where you found the information.
- Keep personal opinions out of paragraphs 1–5. Paragraph 6 is for you to express what you think, feel, or believe. Earlier paragraphs are to record what others are saying about the work.
Structure:
- Title/Photo Page: The first page must include a high-resolution visual of a selected work of art, the artist’s name, and the title of the work.
- Context (Paragraph #1): The first paragraph must include the context of the work. The context helps to set the stage for a discussion of the selected work. In this paragraph, discuss: when and where the work was created (date, place); relevant background information that sheds light on the work of art (i.e. political, social, and/or religious ideas prevalent during the time of the artist); and any background information about the artist that is relevant to understanding the work.
- Descriptive Inventory (Paragraph #2): In this paragraph, discuss what materials were used, such as the medium, as well as the size, the general physical description of what you initially saw in the work, and what style was used for the design (i.e.: abstract, realistic, naturalistic, non-objective).
- Formal Analysis (Paragraph #3): In this paragraph, discuss how the work was created in terms of the design principles. Research what authors are saying about the formal properties of the work. Formal properties means the use of the elements of design (such as line, plane, mass, texture, negative space, light, time and motion) and the principles of design (such as the gestalt principles, balance, pattern, repetition, rhythm, emphasis, proportion, and scale) within the composition. Include your own analysis of the elements of principles of design, along with what authors are saying about the work. If you need to use two paragraphs for this component of the paper, do so, since this is the main emphasis of the course.
- Technical Aspects (Paragraph #4): In this paragraph, discuss how it was created in terms of art techniques. Research specifically what techniques were used to create the work of art from beginning to end. (i.e. What specific tools were used to create the design? Did the artist use an armature in the beginning stages of the process? What type of patina was applied to the work at the end of the process? etc.).
- Content (Paragraph #5): In this paragraph, discuss why it was created. Research what the artist, and/or art historians are saying about the meaning of the work of art.
- Personal Evaluation and Spiritual Reflections (Paragraph #6): In this paragraph, write about your reactions and/or opinions about the piece. For example: (1) After studying the way the elements and principles of design were used in the work, is there a design take away (practical application) that you could incorporate into your own work? (2) If you had been the artist, are there some areas of the design (composition) you would have done differently to communicate the message you feel the artist was/is trying to deliver? If so, explain why and how. (3) What are some spiritual insights you have gained from studying the work? There are times that the Holy Spirit will give the believer spiritual insight into the designs of others, even if they are not created by Christians (or the intent of the artist). Feel free to share these thoughts as well.
- Bibliographic Notations: Write the names of the sources that you used for the paper at the conclusion of the paper. Include at least 3 sources other than the text and the Bible and put them in alphabetical order.
