A prefix tree is a data structure that stores a collection of words in a tree structure. Each node in a prefix tree represents a single character in a word, and it has up to 26 children, one for each letter of the alphabet. Since words can appear inside other words, prefix tree nodes also keep track of whether a word ends after their character.

For example, the prefix tree containing the words be, bee, bed, best, and cat would look like the tree below (nodes that end words have a double circle):

prefixtree.png

Note that the root node doesn’t have an associated letter; the first letter of the word is a child of the root node. Also, nodes will never have more than one child for the same letter: the words “be”, “bee”, “bed”, and “best” all share the “b” node below the root.

Your task for this lab is to implement two member functions for a PrefixTree class. The first member function is addWord. This function accepts a string, and it adds nodes to the PrefixTree so that this word is included. For example, to add the word “car” to the tree above, you would need to add a new node containing “r” below the “a” node. To add “dog”, you would need to add 3 new nodes (“d”, “o”, and “g”) below the root node.

The second member function to implement is contains. This function accepts a string and returns whether that word has been added to the PrefixTree. The prefix tree above contains “be”, but it doesn’t contain “beer” or “bes”.

You have been provided with some code to get you started.

The most relevant member functions are described below:

  • PrefixTree::getRoot(): returns the root node of the PrefixTree
  • PrefixTreeNode::getChild(char): returns the child of this node corresponding to the given letter (null pointer if that child doesn’t exist)
  • PrefixTreeNode::addChild(char): adds a child to this node that corresponds to the given letter
  • PrefixTreeNode::isFinal(): returns whether this node is the end of a word
  • PrefixTreeNode::setFinal(bool): changes whether this node ends a word

The provided driver file accepts 4 different commands. The “quit” command ends the program, while typing “add word” will add a word to the PrefixTree (replace “word” with what you want to add). Typing “search word” will print out whether the tree contains that word, and typing “print” will print out a representation of the PrefixTree. The print functionality prints children after their parent, and if a node has multiple children, they appear as a comma-separated list in parentheses. Letters that end a word are capitalized. For example, the prefix tree in the example above would be printed as “(bE(D,E,sT),caT)”. The print function is already implemented, so you can use this to test your addWord function.

You should submit a source file that contains the definitions of the missing addWord and contains member functions of PrefixTree.

1. Read Chapter 11 and watch the Risk Management: Roles and Responsibilities for Data Governance video (Links to an external site.). Then, assume you have been hired into an IT group to manage the databases at a company. Maria is a business data analyst who is also responsible for data standards. Explain how your responsibilities would differ from Maria’s responsibilities and how the two of you would work together to provide information to the company. Consider who is responsible for the database technology, maintaining confidentiality of the data, data backups, determining who can access the data, data security, keeping the data contents accurate and up-to-date, specifying the data codes, etc. This is the question. you don’t have to write that. just give feedback to their answers. choose any two from ((A-C) down below.

A. As the manager of the IT databases, I would be responsible for hardware and software upgrades. I would also responsible for assessing transaction processing and database production options. In this role, I would also maintain the database(s) performance by troubleshooting anomalies and working with the programmers to accomplish platform upgrades and system improvements. If the system was provided by and supported by a third party vendor, I would work with that vendor to ensure all of these tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Maria’s role as a business data analyst would be responsible for ensuring the quality and accuracy of the data is maintained. She would do this by working with the user community to ensure data is standardized. If anomalies in the data occur, she would be responsible for tracing the data back to the source and providing educational opportunities to prevent future mishaps with data entry. Maria would also oversee the data codes that ensure information is cross referenced and translated into the standards that were setup for the system.

If I were truly in the this role, I would ensure that both Maria and I were cross trained to ensure the database technology was kept up to date, confidentiality of the data was maintained, backups are being completed, and creating security around the data and only providing access on a need to know bases. The security access to the system would be based on Active Directory roles that are tied into the system. So marketing would only see marketing related data, sales would see sales, etc. There would also be hybrid roles for managers that need to gather data across departments and/or the organization as a whole.

B. Information is vital in our daily lives, but the information sector is given very little attention. This is because data is considered necessary in the department because the information collected is very shallow compared to data which defines information in general. The power of knowledge was considerably influenced by technological advancement and the internet, whereby institutions raised information to increase their revenue. For companies to attain positive results in any organization, the data collected must be used appropriately and free from manipulation. The partnership between the information technology department and business must work together (Tallon, 2013). Therefore, ensuring the management is successful in achieving the organizational goals with the set time frame. Thus, there is the employment of data manager in any organization. For the data manager to work effectively in employing the data, it must pass through the information analyst who assesses its relevance and reliability.

The manager and information analyst work together, and they much rely on laid put responsibilities. In this case, the duty of the information analyst, who is Maria and I the data manager, differs significantly in many ways. Data analyst only focuses on known data; this data is obtained from the whole of the experience. On the other hand, the information manager estimates future data and uses it to determine its impact on market growth. Another significant difference is the nature and complexity of the work (Woods, 2016). As data analysts, I will conduct all activities related to data management task to frame the problem the business is facing. Any problem encountered provides an opportunity for a recommendation on how to deal with different challenges in the institution. Maria only analysis data to find a solution on specific queries the organization faces. The information Maria obtains is represented on charts and graphs.

C. If I were hired to work in the IT department with the responsibility of managing databases, my duties would include engaging with the applications that are utilized to process and/or house the data. The data management tools could range from hardware, software to including cloud-based. In my role of database management, I would also be expected to oversee our organizations’ s data storage, retrieval abilities, and serve as the database administrator for one or many applications. My job’s framework would also include be implementing security protocols and processes designed to protect the data such as disaster recovery plans, upgrading databases, install and test new software and run back-up programs.

My database management role and responsibilities would differ from Maria’s role of Business Data Analyst in several ways. However, our functional oversight would be closely aligned and have some similarities/overlap. A few of our key differences are found in the functional skill set and data management focuses between the two roles. Where Maria’s role would include a daily responsibility of reviewing the data output as it ties to its functional use and meaning. My role would be more custodial and targeted on the data format and housing. Maria would spend more of her time exploring the usefulness and meaning of the data with end-users, department leads, and execs, as means for identifying data gaps, data trends/patterns, challenges, upholding data quality, and providing an overall analysis. Both roles will benefit an organization and seem to pair well as they both bring an in-depth knowledge of data management.

One or Two Aspects of Communication in the Scientific Environment

by Charles Zalabak*

In desperation, I begin this essay with the hope that once the writing is finished, I will again be able to eat and drink without ulcerative tendencies, that I will be able to breathe without palpitations. To free myself of the anxiety over getting it done prompts me to action. I am sure that by doing so, those who are awaiting the completion will no longer point an accusing finger and I will recover a modicum of self-respect.† After all, I feel that a few of my experiences may be noted, with benefit, by a student interested in communication in the technical world.

Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics (communication requirement: one semester of public speaking) I went to work for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) as a research scientist. When the NACA became a part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA), I was more concerned with product development. The working conditions were very good by my evaluations. Resources were adequate (a researcher will almost always claim a better job could be done with more money and what it can buy in simulations, manpower, supplies, and time), the environment was stimulating (exciting fields of inquiry, capable and generally compatible people), and a review process by which the research projects were maintained was consistent with needs.

To examine the process of communication as I experienced it at NASA, let me describe several assignments and leave the details of communication analysis to the student and to those better qualified than I.

As a new employee just out of school, one might expect to do menial tasks, of course. One of my first assignments in the research environment was the plotting of curves, whereby it is possible to deduce a mathematical relationship or to check how closely the experimental data fit the theoretical curve. Today, of course, electronic curve plotters eliminate the tedium, except as it applies to the programmer. Whether an assignment is individually completed or performed with sophisticated technology, the scientist is concerned with determining what are meaningful data. What should be accepted and what should be rejected? How accurate are the standards we use for judgment? I have frequently asked myself the questions: What about data that were rejected on the basis of such situations as instrument error or nonstable set point? Were some of those data also meaningful? If so, what was the impact of discarding those data?

As in most research environments, we were constrained in design by a variety of limitations. I was assigned to create mechanical designs to convey concepts, materials, and dimensions for needed equipment such as a furnace capable of high-temperature materials testing. Did the need for limitations provide equipment (and resulting data) that could be misused by persons not fully understanding the limitations?

Report writing—formal communication—was the culmination of a research effort. After progress and findings had been reviewed by supervisors and agreement had been obtained that the results merited distribution, a draft report was prepared for supervisor approval. Corrections made, the report was submitted to an editorial committee that included a checker (responsible for accuracy of formulas, calculations, and references), a co-worker or two (not directly on the project), and a person attempting to ensure the report would be comprehensible to technical persons not in the same specialty area (described as a mean intelligence). The author of the report could expect sessions with the editorial committee to be lengthy and somewhat combative. Following additional corrections/approvals, the grammarians made their recommendations. Final corrections, duplication, distribution, and cataloguing were the responsibilities of the author(s). Communicating the results was part of the research assignment.

The communication examples, questions, and concerns I have described were basic to most of my assignments. Additionally, technical reviews as presenter or participant were common at various levels in both group and interpersonal settings. Again, the responsibility to examine and critique was as much a part of the job as actual manipulation of data.

Throughout, I found an honest, ethical relationship pervasive among people, a sincere attempt to present findings with full disclosure of the limitations. And yet, we have witnessed a space-mission failure resulting in death. And digressing to other areas of science, we remember Nobel felt compelled to fund a commemoration of peace efforts because his discovery of dynamite was so devastating. We note the pollution of air, water, and land due to accidents arising from nuclear fission and the potential pollution from fission residues that require disposal. Disposal of toxins from manufacturing processes poses increasing problems, as does the use of toxins by inadequately informed people. The list can be continued. However, the point is that in each case the initial product was to improve the lot of the human race—from dynamite as a source of concentrated energy to pesticides that improve agricultural productivity and facilitate distribution.

So what about communication (besides the fact that a lack of communication contributed to the above-cited problems)? I see work being done to advance the discipline. As cause and effect become better defined, the potential for abuses grows. Can the student of communication help establish a course of action to forestall these abuses, as well as guide the technical community so they may better convey the totality of information?

1. How does Zalabak see human communication influencing scientific progress?

2. Can you identify other examples of scientific problems related to human communication?

3. How should scientists be trained in human communication?
