Project #1: Interview with a health care system stakeholder.

Identify a significant stakeholder in the U.S. health care system, contact him or her, and arrange and conduct an interview (in person, or over the phone). This stakeholder may be a hospital administrator, a physician, a nurse, a health insurance executive, a politician, a human resources manager at a company, or a consumer with significant knowledge of or experience with the health care system. (Note: We will discuss assignments of stakeholder type in class.) During the interview, pose the following questions (you may ask additional questions, as you have time):

  1. What are the major problems with the U.S. health care system today, from your perspective?
  2. What major trends do you see occurring in the health care system in the next 5 to 10 years?
  3. What changes would you like to see in the system, and how could they be brought about?
  4. What do you see as your role in improving health and health care delivery?
  5. From your perspective, what is the outlook for careers in healthcare management?
  6. What are top 5 skills or competencies needed for a career in healthcare management?

Write up and submit your interviewee’s answers to the foregoing questions. Do not omit to list the name, organization, and title of the person you selected for interview and why you selected this individual.

Question 1:
John Alien, a native and citizen of England, entered the U.S. under a non-immigrant visa in April 2004. During his stay in the U.S. he fell in love with a U.S. Citizen, married, and adjusted his status to a Lawful Permanent Resident. He became an LPR in April 2006. He has two children (ages 3 and 5) from the marriage and owns a beautiful home in Florida. He is an IT specialist for a very large military defense contact corporation and earns approximately $130,000 per year. He has a growing 401(k) and excellent health insurance for his family through his job. With his robust salary, his wife is able to stay at home and raise their two children. He has an impeccable reputation in the community and is active in his local church and his children’s school activities. In May 2016, John was arrested for possession of cocaine. He has no prior criminal history. He pleaded guilty to the crime and was placed in immigration removal proceedings for the drug conviction.

The Notice to Appear charges John with violating §237(a)(2)(B)(i) of the INA, as having been convicted of a drug offense. You are the immigration judge presiding over his removal hearing.

-Can John be placed in removal proceedings? Will you as a judge sustain the charge of removabilty?

-If John is removable and the proceedings are proper, what forms of relief from removal are available to John? If any relief is available, would you grant such relief? Why?

Decide the case as the judge.

Teddy lives in Los Angeles, having arrived through crossing the Mexican border unlawfully 10 months ago. Teddy mostly gets by doing odd jobs and whatever he can do to make some cash. He would like to obtain work authorization so he can get a steady job and earn some more money, afford a place to live, and improve his overall standard of living. His friend, who has a work permit and a good job, tells Teddy he got his work permit after he was granted asylum in the U.S. Interested in obtaining asylum for himself, Teddy shows up at your law office asking what he has to do to get asylum.

-What specifically would you tell Teddy regarding what he needs to show to obtain asylum?

After your explanation, Teddy says he’s not sure he would qualify, but that he’s a “great storyteller” and since there are no strict documentary requirements for asylum, he’s sure he could convince the asylum office to grant his case. Teddy asks you to assist him in preparing his application and prepping for his asylum interview.

-How should you respond to Teddy? Will you assist him? What additional questions would you ask, or additional information would you gather.

After you speak more with Teddy, he asks your advice on what could happen to him if he were to make up a false narrative in an attempt to obtain asylum.

-What would you tell Teddy?

Please explain your responses in detail.

Question 4. (7 marks)
The homo economicus view of man’s behaviour as applied to the bulk of finance theory portrays decision makers and being both self-interested and rational. Neoclassical economics makes some fundamental assumptions about people:
1. People have rational preferences across possible outcomes or states of nature.
2. People maximize utility and firms maximize profits.
3. People make independent decisions based on all relevant information.
In light of the following hypothetical experiments, discuss the above

Experiment 1:

Ten people are in Room X (givers) with a further ten people in Room Y (takers). Each giver in Room X will be paired with a taker in Room Y although they will not know the identity of the other. Givers have been given $20 and can transfer any part of their $20 to a taker in Room Y. Takers can either choose to keep the amount sent, in which case the amount proposed is final or else reject the amount sent, in which case both individuals receive nothing. That is, you can send any dollar amount from $0 to $20 and the taker can accept this offer, or reject it, in which case you both receive nothing. For example, If the taker accepts and you send $10, you keep $20 – $10.
You are a giver. How much do you give?

1)

  • Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication when delivering a speech
  • Identify the audience and environmental variables that influence speech delivery
  • Apply common techniques for accepting and managing listener feedback

Assignment Overview

In this case study, you will explore the process of interpreting audience-related and environmental factors as well as adjusting speech content and delivery to adapt to the situation.

Deliverables

Step 1 Consider the scenario.

Your professor has asked you to give a speech at an upcoming job fair that will convince the audience to take the speech class in which you are currently enrolled. The job fair will be held in a part of the city with a relatively low unemployment rate and the people attending are likely to come from middle- to upper middle-class families. Many of them also work full-time and are looking for opportunities to advance their careers with higher education, but do not want to waste time or money on classes that won’t directly relate to their current work or their goals. You can’t gather all the characteristics of all the career fair attendees in advance, but you do know that the way in which you explain the advantages of taking this course and the type of language you use will affect the attendees’ decision on whether or not to enroll.

Step 2 Answer the questions.

In a one-page (250-word) paper, address the following related to the scenario:

  • When you state your thesis, how will you phrase it to avoid negative reactions from potential applicants who are expecting more pay and better benefits when they first start with the company?
  • What language strategies would you use in your speech to make it sound more appealing to the entire group?
  • What techniques could you use to establish common ground with everyone in the audience?
  • How would you change your speech delivery if the audience consisted mostly of low-income mothers trying to enter or re-enter the workforce?

2)

  • Apply a range of techniques for creating different types of presentation aids
  • Demonstrate how to incorporate presentation aids successfully into a speech

Assignment Overview

In this practice exercise, you will explore the process of determining points within a speech that can benefit from the use of presentation aids during the delivery.

Deliverables

A one-page (250-word) paper and an original presentation aid

Step 1 Refer back to a past outline

Step 2 Determine presentation aids.

Determine the type(s) of presentation aids that would best support your points.

  • When identifying the type of presentation aid, keep in mind that you will be creating one of these presentation aids as the next step in the assignment. You must be able to submit the presentation aid electronically.
  • Enter the information about the presentation aids for the two points into your word processing document.
  • Include a brief explanation of how each type of presentation aid will support the corresponding point in the speech.

Step 3 Create a presentation aid.

Select one of the presentation aids that you identified and create it. For example, you could:

  • Use a software application such as Microsoft Excel to create a chart or graph.
  • Create a few PowerPoint slides that you would use during a specific part of your presentation.
  • Take a digital photograph that illustrates a concept or point in your speech.
  • Record a portion of an interview as an mp3 file.

These are just a few ideas of how you could create a presentation aid for your speech. Whatever type of presentation aid you create, follow the guidelines presented in the lesson to make the presentation aid as effective as possible.

Step 4 Write a summary.

In a one-page (250-word) summary, describe how you would incorporate the presentation aid into your speech delivery.

  • At what point would you introduce the presentation aid? How would you use it to enhance your presentation?
  • Are there any special considerations you should take into consideration when preparing to present your speech based on including the presentation aid?
