USE THE CASE STUDY OF JAKE

Discussion: Using Research to Select a Therapeutic Modality

Imagine that some of your colleagues mention using cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and reality therapy. Your colleagues continue to say that based on their experiences, they really like these therapies and that they appear to work. Your instincts also tell you that perhaps they might be helpful for your client in your case study. However, from Week 1, you recall that experiences and instincts as sources of knowledge are quite limited because they are biased. Instead, it is important to utilize existing research and data to support your choices of interventions. Theory helps inform the evidence-based practice process that should guide social workers’ practice.

In this Discussion, you examine the research related to a therapy based on cognitive or cognitive behavior theory to determine its effectiveness.

To prepare:

  • Recall the client from the case study you have been using in this course. You will apply your research for this Discussion to that client.
  • Select one therapy from the following: cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, or reality therapy.
  • Conduct a search in the Walden Library for one peer-reviewed research study about the effectiveness of the therapy you selected.
    • Note: You must select a study that has not already been used by a colleague in the Discussion. Each student is required to identify a unique research study.
  • Remember when looking for studies to take into account your client’s age and developmental stage and presenting problem.

By Day 3

Post:

  • Provide the reference for the study you found using APA guidelines.
  • Briefly paraphrase, in 2 to 3 sentences, the methodological context (i.e., research method, how data was collected, and the instruments used) of the study and the findings.
  • Evaluate the findings in terms of its applicability or appropriateness for the client in your case study.
  • Determine whether you would use or not use the therapy you selected for the client in your selected case study (consider how culturally relevant it is, how aligned it is with social work ethics, etc.) and explain why.

Instructions for Essay #2 : Argument Essay

  • Instructions for Essay #3

    The Argumentative Research Essay

    Purpose: To persuade
    Audience: Diverse / Educated adults.
    Length: 4-5 pages (1200 - 1500 words)
Research & Documentation: Minimum of 5 sources with MLA citations

Visual Element: At least one visual element embedded in the essay (chart, graph, photo, etc.)We rarely, if ever, make arguments without being provoked. Rather, when we make an argument, something has happened or someone has done something that inspires us to respond. For this reason, I want your argument to be made in response to a current event. To this end, I am requiring that you choose your topic from the New York Times “Room for Debate” pages. Go to: http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate and view the many topics available.

For each topic there are multiple viewpoints. These will be a central part of the “conversation” to which you respond. Most topics have between four and seven separate viewpoints or arguments about the event or topic. Read all of them. Then begin formulating your own argument in response. While I don’t expect you to quote or summarize from each individual viewpoint for your topic, you should quote, paraphrase, summarize from at least three them.

In addition to the articles on the Room for Debate pages, you will be required to conduct additional research to support your argument. This research can come from any reputable source. See “Evaluating Sources” for tips on selecting reputable, scholarly sources.

Whichever topic you choose, you will eventually need to develop an argumentative thesis statement that clearly identifies your position on the topic. Remember that a thesis for an argumentative essay should be debatable and should clearly take a stand. Refer to the readings in this section to help you create a debatable thesis statement. To supplement your argument, you must also include at least one visual element in your essay. The visual element can be a chart, graph, photograph or illustration. The visual should be used in such a way as to support the ideas and arguments in your essay and it should be embedded within the body of your essay (not added as an attachment or link). Identify the source of your images next to the image in a textbox or within the body of the corresponding paragraph. To help you choose or create a visual element, refer to the reading in this unit on Visual Rhetoric.

Finally, now would be a good time to review the readings from unit one of this course, particularly those on integrating quotations and citing sources. It is not enough to simply meet the research requirement by throwing in a quote here and there. I want to see that you can integrate the ideas of others neatly into your own argument.

As the Vice President of Rochester Preferred Travel, you are upset with Premier Promos.

Premier is a catalog company that provides imprinted promotional products for companies. Your travel service was looking for something special to offer in promoting its cruise ship travel packages. Premier offered free samples of its promotional merchandise, under its “No Surprise” policy.

You asked yourself, “What can we lose?” and on January 11, you placed a telephone order for a number of samples. These included:

  • An insulated lunch sack
  • A portable power strip in a zippered case
  • A square-ended barrel bag with fanny pack
  • A deluxe canvas attaché case
  • Two colors of garment-dyed sweatshirts

All items were supposed to be free. But it seemed odd to you when they asked for your company’s credit card number. This was because Premier had promised to bill you only if you decided to keep these sample items.

When the items arrived, you were not pleased. You returned them all on January 21. You have a postal receipt showing the return. However, your February credit card statement showed a charge of $258.20 for the sample items. You called Premier in February and spoke to Virginia, who assured you that a credit would be made on your next statement. However, your March statement showed no credit. You called again and received a similar promise. It’s now April and no credit has been made. You realize that this situation is now too complicated for another telephone call, and you decide to write and demand action.

Based on your research and understanding of the scenario, create a document in Microsoft Word that is a draft of a complaint letter. Using search terms such as “writing” AND “business letter” or “complaint letter”, use the South University Online Library to find resources that will help you write the letter.

The complaint letter needs to be addressed to:

Ms. Arletta Sandusky, Customer Services, Premier Promos, 2445 Bermiss Road, Valdosta, GA 31602.

Your letter should include the following elements:

  • All the essential parts of a business letter.
  • The opening and closing of the letter must demonstrate originality.
  • The letter must have positively phrased content.

Submission Details:

  • Cite any sources you use in APA format on a separate page.
  • Submit your letter in a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document.

Week 8: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Groups

CBT is the most widely researched psychotherapeutic model with demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of a wide range of emotional and behavioral problems. CBT is the first order of business and treatment of choice for most patients who need internal resources and coping skills enhanced.

—Dr. Sharon M. Freeman Clevenger,
Psychotherapy for the Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse

Although designed for therapy with individuals, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has also proven effective in group settings. With its many benefits, including cost-effectiveness and efficiency, this therapeutic approach allows the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner to effectively treat a greater number of clients in a relatively short length of time. With the widespread use of CBT with groups, it is important for you to understand how to use this therapeutic approach in clinical settings.

This week, as you explore CBT for groups, you compare CBT in group and family settings. You also develop diagnoses for clients receiving group psychotherapy and consider legal and ethical implications of counseling these clients.

Discussion: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Group Settings Versus Family Settings

As you might recall from Week 5, there are significant differences in the applications of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for families and individuals. The same is true for CBT in group settings and CBT in family settings. In your role, it is essential to understand these differences to appropriately apply this therapeutic approach across multiple settings. For this Discussion, as you compare the use of CBT in group settings and family settings, consider challenges of using this approach with your own groups.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Compare the use of cognitive behavioral therapy for groups to cognitive behavioral therapy for families
  • Analyze challenges of using cognitive behavioral therapy for groups
  • Recommend effective strategies in cognitive behavioral therapy for groups

To prepare:

  • Reflect on your practicum experiences with CBT in group and family settings.

Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues’ postings. Begin by clicking on the Post to Discussion Question link and then select Create Thread to complete your initial post. Remember, once you click submit, you cannot delete or edit your own posts, and you cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking Submit!

By Day 3

Post an explanation of how the use of CBT in groups compares to its use in family settings. Provide specific examples from your own practicum experiences. Then, explain at least two challenges counselors might encounter when using CBT in the group setting. Support your response with specific examples from this week’s media.

Applying Middle Range Theories to Practice

Last week you began exploring literature in support of specific practice problem. One step in the analysis of literature is examining the theoretical framework that guided the study. Middle range theories are frequently used to guide nursing research and it is likely that some of the articles you reviewed used a middle range theory. This week, you will examine how middle range theories bring to light concepts in health care and the DNP-prepared nurse’s role in developing and refining middle range theories for advancing nursing science and improving practice.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on the information presented in this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the development and use of middle range theories in nursing practice and research.
  • Search the Walden Library and other scholarly databases looking for examples of the development, analysis, or use of middle range theories in clinical practice.
  • Determine current trends in the development and use of middle range theories in nursing practice and research.
  • Consider how the development of new middle range theories advances nursing as a science.

By Day 3 post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

  • How does middle range theory illuminate concepts in health and health care delivery?
  • What do you see as your particular role in developing (or evaluating) middle range theories? Why might that be important to advancing nursing science and improving clinical practice?
