Start this week’s discussion by reading Kidder’s research and his differentiation between “affirmative action” and “negative action.” It’s important to understand that when people cite the Princeton study by Thomas Espenshade in which “an Asian American applicant must score 140 points more than her white counterpart on the 1600-point SAT” — that’s actually reflective of negative action, rather than affirmative action. Kidder explains his claim in more detail to highlight the problems with Espenshade’s Princeton study.
Interestingly enough, Espenshade himself later commented in 2015 that “I stop short of saying that Asian-American students are being discriminated against in the college application process because we don’t have sufficient empirical evidence to support that claim.” Despite Espenshade’s own admission, his study is still utilized as an example by opponents of affirmative action. Then read the other articles, which lay out claims about where Asian Americans stand (and have stood) with regard to affirmative action and assess your own position.
For your prompt, address why you think a large portion of Asian Americans support affirmative action while anti-affirmative action elements seem more visible? Do those groups differentiate between negative action versus affirmative action? Moreover, consider your own position: how valuable is diversity is to a university campus, and how should a university maintain that diversity, if it’s valuable? Why is affirmative action based on race such a hot-button issue when universities regularly grant preferential treatment to students who don’t meet the standards of merit, such as athletes or legacies (e.g., children of alumni, especially those who donate to the university — a sentiment illustrated in the political cartoon below)? Why are those admissions not questioned? Should they be?
