Improving Production Processes
This week, your Resources introduced you to a number of business methods that have been developed to help companies improve their production process and increase profitability. Among these are Total Quality Management (TQM), Lean Business Practice, and Six Sigma. The methods differ on the purpose of their analysis with TQM focusing on the needs of the customer, Lean focusing on the process flow in order to eliminate waste, and Six Sigma focusing on using the process for quality control.
As you review your Resources this week, especially the article on “Six Sigma vs. Lean: Some Perspectives from Leading Academics and Practitioners”, and continue your research in the Library, and prepare to write your Discussion posting, contemplate the following. Note: You do not need to directly address these points in your Discussion post as they serve only to begin your thinking process; however, you must explain your reasoning as you formulate your formal response.
- Reflect on how these types of methods could be utilized in your own organization or in an organization you are familiar with.
- Think about the implications for organizations that do not use formal methods to improve processes or examine operations.
To prepare for this Discussion Question:
- Conduct your own research on organizations that are using business practices associated with TQM, Six Sigma, or Lean Business Practice and select one that is of interest to you.
- Briefly summarize how the organization you selected for your own research, is utilizing one or a combination of TQM, Six Sigma, or Lean Business Practice (include a link to your source).
- Discuss which of the characteristics reported in the Antony (2010) article were present in the organization you reviewed. What are you able to deduce about the benefits of these processes to the organization?
- What recommendations would you make to your own organization or an organization you are familiar with based on what you have learned through your research about these business practices?
Now addresses and answer one the following:
