Re: Week 4: Discussion Question 1

Technology is being used in different ways in the education system. We are asked to decide if technology is helpful in all areas of development. In order to properly answer this question we first need to understand what is the difference between low and high technology and how they benefit individuals with Autism.

Low tech is communication aid that are not electrical or battery operated. Examples: communication boards, books, picture exchange communication system, visual schedule/direction, sign language.

High tech describes all electronic communication aids from single message switch to sophisticated, computer based communication system. Examples: mobile devices, voice output communication aids, computers, videos, adaptive hardware

Benefits:

Overall understanding of their environment

Expressive communication skills

Social interaction skills

Motivation skills

Organization skills

Academic skills

Self-help skills

Overall independent daily functioning skills

The definition of technology according to an oxford dictionary, is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. As a educator, we are using technology daily to educate and support our students because we are using the scientific knowledge (evidence-based practices) to accommodate our students with Autism. Technology is the education word is broken down into low tech, mid tech and high tech…each technology were created by the application of mental and physical effort to solve a real world problem.

I think that technology can benefit all areas of development depending on how it is used. If it is used as teaching tools rather than just a way to occupy a child’s time there are many benefits to using technology. Hand-eye coordination improves, spatial skills, problem solving, helps motivate, and can be extremely helpful in communication. Low-tech are not battery powered systems. Common examples of lo-tech systems include picture exchanging, printed word boards, communication books & sign language (Low, n.d.). Using low-tech devices are extremely helpful in teaching social skills and behaviors to students with ASD. Pictures can help students learn to practice a certain behavior or skill, so they can start to do the behavior or skill on their own at some point. High-Tech systems rely on power & re-chargeable battery packs as they generally use lighted dynamic displays & synthesised voices. They run sophisticated software vocabularies, multiple voices, are fully accessible, & can be thoroughly customized. Operating systems can be Windows, Android or iOS (Low, n.d.). High-tech devices offer more vocabulary options, they can be used without assistance, one can communicate with more groups, they can be custom made to an individual, and it can provide auditory feedback. High-tech devices can be the voice of someone who might not be able to verbally express their thoughts and feelings, which can help cut down on behaviors.

I do not feel as though technology benefits all areas of development. However, I do believe that it could be beneficial in some aspects for some individuals. It is important to remember that when considering the use of technology one assess the individual to determine what will be the most appropriate form of AAC. There is low-tech and high-tech AAC devices.

Low-tech aided devices include the use of pictures, letters, or words in order for the individual to make a request. The most commonly known form of low-tech aided AAC is, PECS. One benefit of low-tech AAC is that it is more affordable. Low-tech would be more appropriate for students do not have limited motor skills.

High-tech aided AAC devices are made up of devices including iPads, smartphones, text-to-speech, etc. This gives one the ability to modify a program to meet the students needs/wants and be able to express it in a way they choose. High-tech devices are designed more for individuals with minimal movement.
