This assignment will address the third step in preparing for the Final Paper assignment, considering individualism or collectivism as they apply to you, your choice of work setting and your functioning in a work setting.
This topic is covered in last week’s text reading form Twenge, J. M., & Campbell, W. K. (2017) Chapter 11 Culture Shaping Personality Through Individualism vs. Collectivism pps. 297-311 (15 pgs.) and Cultural Differences in the Big Five Personality Traits p. 312-322, (11 pgs.), the Context Survey, and the Individualism Collectivism Cleavage Tables and Map.
I have attached my Context Survey results in the attachment. In short terms, I am a: Simply put, a low-context person is mostly driven by tasks and their accomplishment, generally views the development and maintenance of relationships as more of a hindrance, or at least more of a means than an end, and because the “task” is so important, appreciates directness and explicitness. This individual also dislikes hierarchy and sees it as a barrier to communication and knowledge, both or which are necessary to “get things done.”
Regarding Individualism vs. Collectivism, I go more towards individualism. I concentrate on myself and how I can achieve my goals, even in work. In collectivism, I tend to work in teams for some work projects, but mostly with close friends and their personal projects and my spouse.
Write a 1 to 3 page paper (500-700 words) with 3 paragrapshs.
- First Paragraph – Describe your orientation to individualism or collectivism or some combination of each and why you think this is the case.
- Second Paragraph – Describe your choice of a work setting and how this fits or may not fit with your orientation to individualism or collectivism.
- Third Paragraph – Given your understanding of individualism and collectivism, how do you envision functioning effectively in the work setting you describe.
