MATH 119-002 Fall 2019: Excel Project 1 Please save file as “Excel 1 – Last Name, First Name”. Make sure to use the template provided on Sakai. 1. Evaluate the following expressions in Excel. Remember to start with an ”=” sign, ∗ as multiplication, and ˆ for powers. (a) 81 6 + 23 − 10 (b) 10∗3 3−5 (c) 700 1 + 0.06 4 4∗5 (d) √ 29 − 4 + 16 − 4 2 (e) e 0.08∗5 (f) 5e 0.06∗7 (round to two decimal places) 2. Enter the following data and create a scatter plot. Label the plot “Problem 2” and label each axis appropriately. (a) Is the data best fit by an exponential, linear, quadratic, or cubic regression? (b) Using your answer for part (a), attach a picture of your best fit graph. 3. Enter the following data and create a scatter plot. Label the plot “Problem 3” and label each axis appropriately. (a) Is the data best fit by a logarithmic, exponential, linear, quadratic, or cubic regression? (b) Using linear regression, model the Calories used per minute as a function of weight. Attach a picture of the graph with the equation on it. (c) Predict the number of calories you would burn if you weighed 105 lbs. Interpret your answer in a complete sentence. Is this interpolation or extrapolation? (d) Predict the number of calories you would burn if you weighed 200 lbs. Interpret your answer in a complete sentence. Is this interpolation or extrapolation? (e) Predict weight of some who used 9.0 calories per minute. Interpret your answer in a complete sentence. 4. A club on campus decided to sell coffee outside during the winter. The table displays cost (in dollars) to serve x cups of coffee per day. Enter the following data and create a scatter plot. (Use appropriate labels.) (a) Is the data best fit by an exponential, linear, quadratic, or cubic regression? (b) Write the linear equation for the cost as a function of cups of coffee per day. (c) Using a linear equation to model the data, find the slope and interpret its meaning in the context of the problem. (d) What does it mean that the cost is 45 dollars for selling 0 cups of coffee? What mathematical name is given to this value? (e) Predict the number of the cost of selling 225 cups per day. Interpret your answer in a complete sentence. (f) Predict the number of cups sold for a 90 dollar cost. Interpret your answer in a complete sentence. 5. Suppose the height (in feet) of a ball thrown into the air is given by: h(t) = 80t − 16t 2 Where t is the time in seconds elapsed since the ball was thrown. (a) Use the equation to create a table of values. Your values should cover the entire path of the ball; you can use whichever intervals between data points that you prefer. Note: please use formulas to fill in the table of values, i.e. your cells should begin with an equal sign, followed by some mathematical formula in terms of the cell corresponding to the correct t-value. (b) Graph the path of the ball using a regression to fit your scatter plot from part (a). Make sure the graph shows the entire path of the ball. 2 (c) Evaluate h(2.5). Interpret your answer in a complete sentence. (d) For which value of t is h(t) = 80? Find all solutions. Interpret your answer in a complete sentence.
